Step Down Converter
Determine if the second compensation
capacitor, C6 is required. It is required if the
ESR zero of the output capacitor happens at
less than four times the crossover frequency.
Or:
8π*COUT*RESR*fC 1
where RESR is the equivalent series resistance
of the output capacitor.
Example:
VOUT = 5V
COUT = 22µF Ceramic (ESR = 10m)
R3 6.8x107 (22x10-6) (5) = 7480. Use the
nearest standard value of 7.5K.
C3 1.59x10-5 / 7.5K= 2.12nF. Use the
nearest standard value of 2.2nF.
If this is the case, then add the second
compensation resistor. Determine the value
by the equation:
2π COUT RESR fC = .055 which is less than 1,
therefore no second compensation capacitor is
required.
C6 = COUT*RESR(max) / R3
Where RESR(MAX) is the maximum ESR of the
output capacitor.
